O-Sensei
believed that a regular practice of the arms was necessary to understand the meaning of the bare-handed movements of Aikido. The practice of the Ken in Kumitachi (both partners have a ken) teaches us a lot about the position of the body and of the hands. So , one must exercise the ken to illustrate the bare-handed techniques. The practise in Tachidori (disarming) requires great care, for the arm is long, dangerous and teaches us about distance.

Jo
The Jo (stick) of about 1,40 m, permits to kow about distance. It is practised alone, with figures called Kata, either with one or several partners in the study of figures and simulations of fight (Kumi-jo)
Another particularity of jo is its perfect symmetry. It can thus strike without any particular orientation. Its two ends are similar, a simple shift of 180° provideds the same efficiency for the strikes of estoc.
